Crossing Borders: the view from elsewhere

083 Saturday 12 March 18:30-19:30Al Ras 2, InterContinental HotelBorn and raised in Morocco, Laila Lalami was working as a computation linguist in Los Angeles when she was taken by the plight of 15 Moroccan immigrants who had drowned while trying to cross to Europe, and so her bestselling short story collection Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits was born, making her the first Moroccan writer to publish English fiction with a major US house.  Her next novel, Secret Son, was also published to great acclaim and her reviews and essays have appeared  in, among other places, the New York Times and the Washington Post.

This event offers the chance to hear how Laila’s status as both an insider and an outsider informs her work, and learn of the challenges facing Moroccans today.
