Saturday 3 March, 12pm-1pm   Al Baraha 3, InterContinental

Batman and Gotham, Ms Marvel and New Jersey, Black Panther and Wakanda – a big part of what defines a hero is the world they defend. Our panel of comics creators journey into the moody cities, ancient deserts and distant worlds of the heroes whose stories they tell in word and picture.

Zaid Adham and Yasser Alireza are the co-creators of Wayl, the story of a man who returns to his home city of Amman, Jordan only to find it in the grip of crime and corruption.

Nnedi Okorafor is writing Antar the Black Knight, a new comics series about pre-Islamic African-Arab legend Antar bin Shaddad; she also recently brought Black Panther and Venom to Lagos for Marvel Comics.

Gabriel Rodriguez is known for the creepy Keyhouse of Locke and Key; he is now working on the genre-bending Arthurian epic Sword of Ages.

Event 57 Wonder Women: Nnedi Okorafor, Rhianna Pratchett

Saturday 3 March, 6pm-7pm   Al Ras 2, InterContinental

Whether relegated to love interest or stuck in the archetype of ‘strong female character’, women in science fiction and fantasy stories haven’t always benefitted from the fantastic worlds they inhabit.

Our panelists discuss the women they write and where fantasy and real-world prejudices meet.

Nnedi Okorafor’s books place brave and unpredictable women at the centre of the story – including Binti, who calls on her intelligence and cultural heritage to make peace with a dangerous alien species.

Rhianna Pratchett reinvented Lara Croft for a new generation – creating an inexperienced but wilful tomb raider who relies on intelligence, tenacity and resourcefulness.

This panel is moderated by Taghred Chandab.
