Prepare to be awed by the spoken word as the finest contemporary poets from the UAE and UK unite on stage at Dubai Opera in this celebration of the power of poetry to bring people together across cultures.

Presented by The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, Dubai Opera, the Ministry of Tolerance, and The British Council, with the support of the UK GREAT campaign, ‘For the Love of Words’ aims to explore the possibilities presented by cultural exchange between the two countries.

The event, which will form part of the UK/UAE 2017 Year of Creative Collaboration closing celebrations, will include the following all-star line-up:

John Agard, Khalid AlBudoor, Nujoom Nasser Alghanem, Simon Armitage, Afra Atiq, Harry Baker, Imtiaz Dharker, Carol Ann Duffy, Roger McGough, Grace Nichols, Lemn Sissay, Hussain Lootah

Event 50 Poetry Mix: Memories

Saturday 3 March, 4pm-5.30pm   Al Baraha 3, InterContinental

Poetry Mix brings together an international cast of poetry stars for an introduction to their work. Expect a wide variety of styles from this talented lineup.

Afra Atiq is an Emirati spoken-word poet. She is a member of the Untitled Chapters group and has a large YouTube following.

Harry Baker is the youngest ever World Poetry Slam champion; his poems combine maths and science with tongue-twisting wordplay and unexpected emotional power.

Chris Hardy is a prize winning poet who often performs as part of the band LiTTLe MACHiNe; in this session he will read from his new collection Sunshine at the End of the World.

Kirun Kapur is the winner of the Arts & Letters/Rumi Prize in Poetry as well as the Antivenom Prize for her first book, Visiting Indira Gandhi’s Palmist.

Lemn Sissay is one of Britain’s best known poets, famous for jaw-dropping performances. Gold from the Stone is a collection of new and favourite poems.

Sjón is an Icelandic poet, novelist and lyricist whose poems have been translated into more than 20 languages. He has won the Nordic Council’s Literary Prize and been nominated for the Icelandic Literary Prize.

Learn the fast-talking, tongue-twisting art of slam poetry from Poetry Slam Weltmeister Harry Baker!

This spoken word performance workshop is designed to inspire and encourage you to create your own performance piece, and to draw on your own personal experiences as material for your work. Fun, interactive and confidence-boosting, this workshop is suited to teenage poets of any level of experience.

The tutor: Harry Baker is a world champion slam poet, occasional rap-battler and author of The Sunshine Kid, his debut collection. His performances have delighted audiences in acclaimed TED talks and sold-out Edinburgh Fringe shows.
