From Book to Screen: Getting Adaptations Right

Event 20 Friday 3 March, 3pm-4pm Al Baraha 3, InterContinental

“Books and movies are like apples and oranges. They both are fruit, but taste completely different.” – Stephen King

As a literature festival, we will always insist ‘the book was better,’ but there is nevertheless an art to making an excellent adaptation of a book for film or television. In this session, our panellists discuss the ways to ensure that an adaptation is true not only to the source material, but to itself.

Andrew Davies has been so successful in bringing the classics to the screen that people now talk of ‘an Andrew Davies Adaptation.’ His latest project is Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables.

Kathy Reichs, author of the Temperance Brennan crime novels, produced the long-running adaptation of her work, Bones – beloved for its mysteries, its wit and its striking visualisation of Reichs’ field of forensic anthropology.

Speaking in Bones

Event 1 Friday 3 March, 10am-11am Al Ras 2, InterContinental

Authors: Kathy Reichs
“I didn't know anything about writing fiction and had no training in writing – I prefer taking science classes – so I just wrote the kind of book I would like to read.” – Kathy Reichs

Forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs has used her expertise in this unusual field to entertain and inspire fans of the Temperance Brennan series, including the latest Brennan novel, aptly called Speaking in Bones, new short story anthology The Bone Collection, and forthcoming standalone novel Two Nights. As one of only 82 forensic anthropologists ever certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology, her real life is every bit as dramatic as her novels: she has been called on to teach FBI agents how to detect and recover human remains, identify war dead in Korea and Southeast Asia, and testify at the UN about the Rwandan genocide.

In Dubai for the first time, Reichs will talk about bringing to life on the page a science that can solve crimes and uncover mysteries that would otherwise be lost to the ages.
