Salma Serry
Salma Serry is a multidisciplinary food researcher, writer and awardwinning filmmaker. After spending 10 years in the media industry, and earning an MA in journalism, she founded @sufra_kitchen, a social media platform that re-approaches food history and culture in SWANA. While currently pursuing further graduate studies in gastronomy at Boston University, she is also working on two food research projects, as commissioned by Art Jameel, that explore the untold histories of Jeddah and Dubai’s foodways. Salma is the recipient of the Julia Child’s Student Writing Award for her work on analyzing midcentury Egyptian Hawaa’ cookbooks. Her writing on food was published in the Arab Literature Quarterly, Condé Nast Traveller ME, and the Journal of Creative Geography and has presented her research at annual conferences such as that of the Association for the Study of Food and Society. She is now working on her first book that documents some of the region’s most influential historical cookbooks.
