Darrel Perkins is an artist, educator, and writer from Rhode Island. He received an MFA in Illustration from Edinburgh College of Art in the UK, and he is currently a professor of Visual Communication at the American University in Dubai. He is a published author and illustrator, most recently the 2022 book The End is at Hand. His artwork has been exhibited in galleries around the world, and locally he organizes art workshops and lectures for a range of ages and experience levels. His commercial illustrations have been licensed for books, clothing, posters, editorial work, and mural painting.
His relief print illustrations feature intricate flowing patterns and often use the human form to depict a narrative scene. Each illustration is carved and printed by hand, in bold black and white contrast. In his books, images and words are intended to pair equally to convey true stories. The dark and tragic tales are presented in a light, honest, and dryly humorous way.
