Event 57 Wonder Women: Nnedi Okorafor, Rhianna Pratchett

Saturday 3 March, 6pm-7pm   Al Ras 2, InterContinental

Whether relegated to love interest or stuck in the archetype of ‘strong female character’, women in science fiction and fantasy stories haven’t always benefitted from the fantastic worlds they inhabit.

Our panelists discuss the women they write and where fantasy and real-world prejudices meet.

Nnedi Okorafor’s books place brave and unpredictable women at the centre of the story – including Binti, who calls on her intelligence and cultural heritage to make peace with a dangerous alien species.

Rhianna Pratchett reinvented Lara Croft for a new generation – creating an inexperienced but wilful tomb raider who relies on intelligence, tenacity and resourcefulness.

This panel is moderated by Taghred Chandab.

Event 111 Julie Tottman: Beastmistress of the Seven Kingdoms

Saturday 10 March, 12pm-1pm   Al Baraha 2, InterContinental

Authors: Julie Tottman
Westeros wouldn’t last a week without someone keeping the ravens in order – and that’s the job of animal trainer Julie Tottman.

Julie is a vital part of the Game of Thrones team, with the difficult but rewarding job of training ravens, wolves, man-eating hounds and (occasionally) over-ambitious directors for their turn in the spotlight. She has also worked on the Harry Potter films, The Dark Knight and many other major film and TV projects.

This riveting conversation will be full of insights into what it takes to bring animal characters to life on the screen, with a look at some of Julie’s favourite scenes.

Julie will be in conversation with Alex Broun.
