Event 23 Costa Debate Prize Giving

Saturday 3 March, 11am-11.30am   Al Ras 3, InterContinental

The winners of the Costa Debate competition will be announced immediately after the session “But First, Coffee”.

The subject under debate was “Print Books or Ebooks?” There are two prizes up for grabs for the best argument submitted in Arabic, and the best in English: a 10,000AED dnata travel voucher!

The prizes will be awarded by Claudia Roden and Gennaro Pellicia.

The Taaleem Poetry Award celebrates young poets. This year’s prize will be presented by award-winning Emirati poet Maryam Mahyoh and beloved author and performer of poetry for adults and children, Roger McGough.

This session is followed by Poetry Pie – a fantastic live performance from Roger McGough and musical poetry maestros LiTTLe MACHiNe!

Event 48 The Montegrappa Writing Prize: Isobel Abulhoul, Luigi Bonomi, Jessica Jarlvi, Karen Osman

Have you always wanted to be an author? It’s time to award the eagerly anticipated 2018 Montegrappa Prize, and if you entered this year then this might just be your breakthrough!

Eight winners to date have secured publishing deals – two past success stories join competition judge Luigi Bonomi to discuss their writing, before 2018’s winners are announced.

Competition entrants can attend the session for free.

Isobel Abulhoul is the Director of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature and CEO and Trustee of the Emirates Literature Foundation.

Luigi Bonomi is a literary agent and represents authors including Judy Finnigan, Richard Madeley and Alan Titchmarsh.

Jessica Jarlvi is the author of the breathtaking, dark thriller When I Wake Up. Her second book will be published in May 2018.

Karen Osman is the winner of the 2016 prize. Her thriller The Good Mother led to a three-book deal with Head of Zeus publishing.

Event 072 Chevron Readers' Cup 2018: Prize Giving

Thursday 8 March, 1.30pm-2.30pm   Al Ras 3, InterContinental

It’s time to award the prizes in the 2018 Chevron Readers’ Cup. For the last few months more than 200 teams of students from all over the Gulf region have been preparing and competing in this test of close-reading skill.

The winning teams will be presented with their prizes by festival authors Mouhannad Alakous and Holly Webb.

Event 106 OUP Prize Giving

It’s time for the winners of the Oxford University Press Story Competition to be announced. Our judges have been diligently reading the entries for four age groups and two languages and have, after much deliberation, decided which stories should win.

Here to present the prizes are Ali Sparkes, author of the Shapeshifter series, Sahar Naja Mahfouz, author of 28 Arabic children's books including The Story Maker, and Alex Brychta and Roderick Hunt, the author-illustrator team behind the Oxford Reading Tree books starring Biff, Chip and Kipper.

After the prizes have been presented, stay on to enjoy Ali Sparkes’ talk, Fantastic Master Fox.
