Session No: 18

Everyone knows the story of Aladdin…, or do they? Since it was first added to The Arabian Nights in an eighteenth-century French publication, it has been interpreted in many ways, most often as a children’s tale of rags-to-riches. Professor of Literature at NYU Abu Dhabi Paulo Lemos Horta discusses a brand-new translation of this beloved folktale that celebrates all the darkness and whimsy you’d expect from a story of a rebellious teenager who is rescued from a double-crossing sorcerer by the wits of a princess.

Language: English with Arabic translation
