‘The number and quality of our friendships may have a bigger influence on our happiness, health and mortality risk than anything else in life, save for giving up smoking,’ maintains Robin Dunbar, the world-renowned anthropologist and evolutionary psychologist who famously discovered Dunbar's number: how our capacity for friendship is limited to around 150 people.

The last two years of restricted social activity has made us all more aware of how friends matter to us, but Dunbar’s work shows they matter more than we think. Friendship, as Dunbar reveals, requires investment. Distance, even in the age of social media, has a catastrophic effect on it, and most connections rely on meeting in person to maintain that bond. Drawing from the latest research he explores our most important relationships, revealing the incredible range of effects that true friendships have on both our mental and physical wellbeing and just how complicated the business of making and keeping friends actually is.

Robin Dunbar will be joining virtually.
