In the pages of history and maps of the world, what are the stories left uncharted and why? A historian, paleoanthropologist and historical fiction writer tackle the joys, challenges and impact of digging up the past in their respective fields, the stories they uncover in the process, and the ones that get left behind.

From Raphael Cormack’s account of Egypt’s roaring 20s through the lives of its female entertainers, to Fadel Al Mheiri’s swashbuckling tale inspired by Arabian history, and Ella Al Shamahi’s battle to explore regions deemed too unstable for field work, come and hear about some fascinating people and places, the conundrum of historical truth, bias, and artistic license in writing about the past, and why these uncharted perspectives matter to our present.

Ella Al-Shamahi is a TV presenter, National Geographic Explorer, paleoanthropologist, evolutionary biologist and stand-up comic. She specialises in Neanderthals, caves and expeditions in hostile, disputed and unstable territories.

Fadel Al Mheiri is an Emirati filmmaker, who produced the documentary Under Construction , the feature film Abood Kandaishan, and wrote the drama A Corsair's Tale. His book, Kingdom of Peacocks - Mists of Time, is the first of a trilogy, about the Portuguese invasion of an imaginary kingdom in the Arabian Gulf in the early 1500s as an allegory to today's extremist groups.

Raphael Cormack is an award-winning editor, translator and academic, specialising in the Arabic culture and particularly Egyptian theatre. Midnight in Cairo explores the cosmopolitan counter-culture in Egypt during the inter-war years of the last century.
