Date/Time: Saturday 5 February 2022 12:00-13:00

Venue: Al Joud Ballroom 3, Hilton, Al Habtoor City

Language: English

Session No: 32

One of the most challenging but effective techniques available to writers and artists is the capturing of a character or place by appealing to all the senses. Each member of our panel approaches the senses in a different way in their work – here they discuss what it takes to capture the touch, taste, sight, sound and smell of the real world with words and brush strokes, on paper and on canvas.

Avni Doshi is the Dubai-based author of the Booker-nominated Burnt Sugar, a novel praised for its wit, atmosphere and depiction of dementia.

Fumio Obata is the author and illustrator of the graphic novel Just So Happens, about a Japanese artist living in London who is drawn back to Japan and its culture by a family death.

Simultaneous Translation is available for this session. Festival attendees can access simultaneous translation via a QR code shared on-site by using their own personal headphones and smartphone.
