Manga artist Fumio Obata focusses on the healing aspects of creativity and being mindful of your surroundings using the idea of Animism. He will introduce examples of anthropomorphism in visual culture and manga in Japan and discuss how objects can successfully be given human characteristics. Workshop participants will consider their relationship to their favourite things as they learn how to create their own characters and devise a short manga story. The workshop is suitable for complete beginners.
The tutor: Fumio Obata is a UK based Comic book artist/Graphic novelist/Illustrator/animator whose work and inspiration come from cultural differences and social issues in his surroundings.
Please bring your own object, something which has meaning for you – from small antiques, cutlery, home accessories and ornaments, musical instruments, to favourite plants or flowers.
Other required materials such as paper and pencils will be provided. Alternatively, you may bring an iPad or tablet device with drawing function using a pen tool, if you prefer to draw digitally.
