Young Indian Muslim Abdul Karim is sent to Britain to present Queen Victoria with a token of appreciation from British-ruled India. Their meeting leads to an unlikely friendship in which Abdul teaches the Queen Urdu, introduces her to the Qur’an – and makes powerful enemies among her courtiers.

Victoria and Abdul, starring Ali Fazal and Judi Dench, is an award-winning adaptation of the book of the same name by acclaimed historian Shrabani Basu.

This screening of Victoria and Abdul will be held at MBRL auditorium and will be followed by a talk and Q&A with Shrabani Basu, who will discuss her research into this stranger-than-fiction episode in the life of one history’s most famous monarchs – and what Victoria and Abdul’s friendship reveals about Victorian Britain and India.

Shrabani Basu is a journalist and Sunday Times bestselling author. Her critically acclaimed books include The Mystery of the Parsee Lawyer, For King and Another Country: Indian Soldiers on the Western Front 1914-18, Victoria & Abdul, Spy Princess: The Life of Noor Inayat Khan, and Curry: The Story of the Nation’s Favourite Dish.
