Join Ranya Abdelrahman and Sawad Hussain as they delve into the world of co-translation, breaking down the different arrangements of co-translation and elaborating on the highlights of each format. The two translators will also discuss their process and approach to co-translating Bothayna Al-Essa's novel - حارس سطح العالم – together. Hear them share how they have navigated its translation, and the unique challenges they faced in bringing across its particular intertextuality and world-building. This session will feature exclusive reading of the book, forthcoming from Restless Books in 2024.
Ranya Abdelrahman is a translator of Arabic literature into English. After working for more than 16 years in the information technology industry, she changed careers to pursue her passion for books, promoting reading and translation. She has published translations in ArabLit Quarterly and The Common, and is the translator of Out of Time, a short story collection by the late Palestinian author Samira Azzam. She is currently co-translating bestselling Kuwaiti author Bothayna Al-Essa’s satirical novel Guardian of Superficialities with Sawad Hussain. Abdelrahman lives in Dubai with her family and a chocolate Labrador named Polo.
Sawad Hussain is a translator from Arabic whose work has been recognized by English PEN, the Anglo-Omani Society and the Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation, among others. She is a judge for the Palestine Book Awards. Her upcoming translations include Black Foam by Haji Jaber and Edo's Souls by Stella Gaitano. She was the 2022 translator in residence at the British Centre for Literary Translation.
