Emirati folktales are characterized by terrifying beasts and immortal mythical creatures such as Khataf Rafai and Umm Al Duwais, and have intrigued the interest of Emirati writers inspiring creative works in crime, horror, and thriller. For the very first time, and as part of Fright Night at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, this panel delves into Emirati horror through novels and films.

Ahmed Zain Al Hashimi is an Emirati director, producer and screenwriter. He received a number of awards in different film festivals, and a number of his works are shown on Netflix.

Ibrahim Al Marzooqi is a writer, specialising in crime and thriller, a scriptwriter, and film director. His first novel, Valium, won second place in the Emirates Prize for Fiction 2017.

Noora Abdulla Al Tenaiji is a novelist and has published five books. She’s also a visual artist who worked in the Department of Political Science at the United Arab Emirates University and held the position of head of the student recruitment unit by commissioning at the university. Her latest book Lucas Civilization was published in 2020.
