Manu S Pillai is the author of award-winning history books The Ivory Throne (2015), Rebel Sultans (2018), The Courtesan, the Mahatma & the Italian Brahmin (2019), and most recently, False Allies: India’s Maharajahs in the Age of Ravi Varma (2021). Pillai was formerly Chief of Staff to Dr Shashi Tharoor MP and worked in the House of Lords in Britain. He also worked as a researcher on the BBC history series Incarnations. Pillai wrote a weekly column for Mint Lounge, and has written articles for publications including The Hindu, Open Magazine and the Times of India. He is currently a PhD candidate at King’s College London.
